This is the right way to replace putty in wooden windows.

1/check all the windows in summer and if needed go
through and knock that old putty out.

2/ Sand and paint with good oil paints, the rebates.

3/ Get on the phone, and get a glazier in to do the
putty, what he does in an hour, will take you two
bloody days.
Looks easy to apply putty, until one stands back and it
looks like waves.

4/ Celebrate being a clever bugger with strong drink of
your choice.

The glazier I normally use tends to stay for the drink afterwards too.

Offered him a taste of my finest, but with drinking and driving laws
today,he said it was just not worth the hassle of having a drink
before driving.

Keep a putty knife wet with turps and shape it with that.
Works like a charm.

That's right. It will also work if you have old putty that's starting to
dry out a bit. A little turps will soften it up (in the can, not in the
window).

It's dead easy to get it looking nice, I wrap a bit of thick plastic
(dampcourse polythene) around my finger, dip it in mineral turps and
smooth out the putty with that.

But, a glazier did show me the trick about 30 years ago.
