It took long enough.

Having 20 DHBs, elected by local body voters who have zero idea who they are voting for, was stupid. THe new model should be much better.

Of course he had to spoil it a little by adding a pointless sop to political correctness and reverse racism with a "Māori Health Authority".

But now under central control? Sounds like the beginnings of another soviet state and we all know how bloody pathetic their health system was for any but the "ruling class"!

t's more accountable under central control. At the moment you have a bunch of elected DHBs and nobody knows who they are voting for. When they inevitably go off the rails the government blames the DHB board and gets a free pass.

It seems doubtful that such an Authority would act in isolation rather than in coordination and integration with and within the overall national health system from which it is to be funded and to which it will be answerable. So, to my mind, its creation appears at least in part to be an act of cultural tokenism rather than exclusivity, such an approach ostensibly being "according to the principles" of the TOW.

Biggest caveats? Gross admin bloat and (polite cough) "unusual payments".
